LG Unveils 97-Inch G2 Gallery Series OLED TV: IFA Berlin 2022

If there was any doubt that TVs are getting bigger, the LG 97-inch G2 will put those doubts to rest. With a screen as large as a typical video projector screen a 97-inch TV might not even fit through the front door, let alone fit on your wall.

As part of LG’s CES 2022 announcements, the company teased a forthcoming 97-inch OLED TV are part of their G2 Gallery Edition line. Following up on that initial tease, LG announced the availability and pricing for most of their TVs, but details for 97G2 were not included.

However, LG is now stating that the monster-sized TV is indeed coming and that it will be displayed at IFA Berlin 2022 (Europe’s Largest Consumer Electronics Show) from September 2-6.  Following that, the world’s largest OLED TV will begin to be released to select markets around the world. No pricing has been announced.

Tip: US availability and pricing will probably not be announced until CES 2023 this coming January.

LG G2 Gallery Edition OLED TVs (including the 97G2) has the following core features:

The 97-inch G2 Gallery Edition features a flush-to-the-wall design, which offers a seamless, integrated look that is intended to elevate the home movie theater experience.

4K UHD Display Resolution

Despite being the largest OLED TV to come to market, the 97G2 has a 4K UHD display resolution. This is interesting as LG offers the 88-inch Z2 OLED and 86-inch QNED miniLED TVs both of which have 8K display resolution and if any screen size deserved 8K, a 97-inch TV would certainly be a logical choice.

EVO Technology

EVO OLED panels working in conjunction with Brightness Booster™ technology and LG’s α (Alpha) 9 Gen 5 intelligent processor (or the processor in the next section) deliver higher brightness while maintaining clarity and detail. Evo panels also feature improved heat dissipation which provides more picture stability at high brightness levels.

LG α9 Gen 5 Intelligent Processor

This processor employs a deep-learning algorithm that enhances upscaling performance which is important for lower-resolution content to look better on a large screen. The a9 Gen 5 also supports the Dynamic Tone-mapping Pro Algorithm, which individually processes over 5,000 areas on the screen, to produce a more vivid and detailed image, in brighter and darker parts of the picture.

LG G2 Ai Soundpro

The α9 Gen 5 also supports better audio quality via AI Sound Pro. You can use the built-in speakers in select TVs, such as the 97G2 to produce a virtual 7.1.2 surround.

WebOS 22 (aka version 6.0)

LG’s Smart TV platform, webOS 22 offers new personalization options, such as customizable user profiles that allow each member of the household to tailor their viewing experience and enjoy easier access to their preferred channels, apps, and content services.

HDR: Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail

The G2 series includes Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail in addition to compatibility with HDR10 and HLG. Dolby Vision IQ with Precisions detail reveals details in both bright and dark areas that may not have been noticeable in previous Dolby Vision-enabled TVs.
